Description

From Visualisation to Analysis: Exploring an integrated approach to digital heritage imaging

With the upsurge in availability of digital photography-based recording techniques, 3D output is increasingly visible in the academic and public domains. However, while often cost-effective and offering the opportunity for real-time dissemination, the potential of the application of such techniques is not always fully capitalised upon. Drawing on experience ranging in scale from macro 3D imaging of artefacts to drone-based landscape modelling, in this talk Dr Sarah Duffy will explore an integrated approach to heritage recording and visualisation.

She will examine the benefits and considerations associated with the use of 2.5D and 3D capture techniques such as Structure from Motion (SfM) and Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI), highlighting not only the opportunities for high-impact visual representation but also the broader analytic potential and opportunities for digital collaboration.

Speaker

Dr Sarah Duffy is a freelance imaging consultant specialising in a variety of digital visualisation techniques. She provides recording and training services for research and conservation projects based in academia as well as commercial and heritage sectors in the UK and farther afield. Her services range from microscopic artefact imaging to landscape survey. Through her work, she emphasises the importance of an informed and reflexive approach to the use of digital recording techniques within the process of archaeological and heritage research and analysis. She is currently collaborating on several international research-based projects and is an Honorary Senior Research Associate at UCL's Institute of Archaeology.
